Discovery and Characteristics of Chiron
Chiron was discovered on November 1, 1977, in an orbit that lies between Saturn and Uranus.
Immediately, this was unexpected. Until that moment, planetary discoveries in the modern world had been progressively further away from the Sun.
But this new object appeared between the realms of the personal and the transpersonal planets.

Its size was also puzzling. It was too small to be a planet, but too large to be an asteroid. Therefore, it was dubbed a “planetoid”.
(Mind you: I consider Chiron to be a planet and I’m not really interested in the controversy surrounding its size.).
In a traditional manner, the new object was given an ancient name. Chiron was named after a son of Kronos in Greek mythology, also known as Saturn by the Romans.
Saturn was the planet outside whose orbit the newly discovered astral body was found.

The astronomy of Chiron provides a starting point for analyzing its significance.
Chiron’s eccentric orbit between Saturn and Uranus is inherently meaningful. This occurs because the two planets have very different astrological associations.
In astrology, Saturn is connected with structure, organization, and boundaries. Uranus, on the other hand, is associated with originality, independence, and revolutionary change.
Saturn represents rules, and Uranus represents rebellions. These two realms of experience have little in common. Therefore, the discovery of Chiron between them affected the astrological status quo.

The discovery of each transpersonal planet has become associated with developments within the collective. Chiron wasn’t the exception.
Since the 70s, many threads can be traced back to Chiron’s influence.
These Chironic threads encompass the way human rights groups operate in a particular manner. They do so in a manner where hierarchical organizations, represented by Saturn, take into consideration the demands of the individual, personified by Uranus.
Another example of Chiron’s influence since the late 70s is the implementation of holistic approaches. There’s a need to implement groundbreaking technology or innovative ideas (Uranus) to effect change within established structures (Saturn).
This can be observed everywhere, from health issues to politics, the arts, and also within the philosophies that guide our existences.
Chiron as Integration and Healing
There are many versions of Chiron’s story in Greek mythology.
In one of the myths, Chiron’s mother was a sea-nymph, and his father was a god. Their union is depicted as a collision between the realms of the physical and the immaterial.
Chiron’s birth in the Greek myth revealed him as the embodiment of two divergent facets of life: animal and human.
His story describes a process that shows him coming to terms with and learning how to use his legacy. Once he mastered it, he was able to share his gifts and capitalize on them.
In astrology, this aspect of Chiron’s story is translated into the theme of integration.
Like the mythological Chiron, each one of us is unique. However, all too often, our distorted self-perception translates this uniqueness into trauma.
For many people, the sense of a split between different dimensions of experience is always present. This split can make it feel impossible to honour our commitment to both our truth and the demands of the rest of the world simultaneously.
Chiron’s myth is a reminder that, for each of us, our journey will include discovering how to accept our differences, value them as unique, and transform them into offerings to the world.
The word “healer” comes from a Greek word that means “to make whole”. Chiron’s healing embodies the quality of bringing together diverse, yet complementary, aspects of our character.
Healing is part of an internal process. It’s not a transformation or a cure brought about by intervention from an outside source. This is one of the most potent reminders of Chiron in the birth chart.
In astrology, Chiron serves as a catalyst that initiates the process of self-acceptance. This self-acceptance must be broad enough to encompass our uniqueness, our quirks, and our imperfections.
Are you willing to engage in this transformative process?
Chiron as Process
All the other planets possess clusters of correspondences and themes. However, Chiron is more closely related to processes rather than principles.
The essence of this process lies in transitioning from sensitivity to wisdom, and from vulnerability to confidence.
Some aspects of Chiron’s process are reflected in issues of self-acceptance, finding acceptance among others, and forming alliances within a tradition.
Chiron is a teacher, healer, shaman, and wise wizard. All of these roles suggest underlying themes of maturity and development.
Since Chiron is positioned at the threshold between the physical and spiritual realms, it serves as a guide to integrating the different dimensions of experience.
The astronomy and mythology of Chiron highlight how an outsider can find acceptance without relinquishing their individuality.
Chiron in the Birth Chart
Since Chiron spends approximately four years in each zodiac sign, its house position in the birth chart offers more insight than its zodiac sign.
Chiron’s house position can show the area of life in which the dilemma of self-acceptance may be most acute. Its aspects in the birth chart explore ways of coming to terms with this issue.

In the birth chart, Chiron reveals issues related to our sense of belonging. Its position by zodiac sign and astrological house can show where we feel misunderstood or where we perceive ourselves to be out of place with those around us.
This displacement may be obvious, or it may be deeply hidden in a fashion that causes painful identity issues.
The quest for resolution can be turbulent and long. But its outcome can be empowering.
By helping us take into account our differences and by questioning automatic notions about where we belong, Chiron guides us towards a more authentic understanding of our unique place in the world.
Chiron’s position in the birth chart indicates the area of life where we can become empowered through awareness of our right to make informed choices.
It also indicates the nature of the tradition to which we belong and the area that holds potential for our knowledge to develop into wisdom.
Welcome to the journey.
