Mars Sextile Saturn: Its Impact During My First Saturn Return

In the previous post, I encouraged you to find the aspects to Saturn within the 5-degree range and journal about them freely.

I also told you to mark the tightest aspect to Saturn with an asterisk.

Have you done it?

I did it, because when it comes to engaging with Saturn, I like to put my money where my mouth is.

So today, I want to share the tightest aspect of my natal chart and how I did some free journaling about it.

If you haven’t done this for yourself, maybe reading this text will inspire and guide you to do so.

This is the table of contents:

To analyze it, I decided to revisit the prompts I wrote in the previous post and answer them regarding this aspect.

After jotting down my answers, you will read a more elaborate text I crafted using them as fuel to ignite my thoughts.

First, the answers. Then, the elaborate text. Here we go.

  • Is the aspect challenging or harmonious?

The aspect is a sextile, so it is harmonious.

According to my post “Aspects to Saturn: A Beginner’s Guide,” harmonious aspects relate to spontaneous abilities, talents, and forms of understanding and expression that I can use and develop easily and consistently.

Harmonious aspects show that the planets’ energies vibrate harmoniously and reinforce each other within my energy field.

The sextile is an aspect that symbolizes openness to the new: new people, new ideas, new attitudes.

It represents the potential to establish new connections with people or ideas that, over time, can lead to discovering something new.

The sextile shows where I can cultivate new levels of understanding and objectivity. It indicates spontaneous harmony and often a specific ability.

It’s associated with the planet Venus.

  • What are the signs involved in the aspect?

The signs involved in the aspect are Sagittarius and Aquarius.

Sagittarius is a fire sign, and Aquarius is an air sign.

In Hellenistic astrology, which bases aspects on signs rather than degrees, the sextile is formed between signs of harmonious elements: Earth and Water on the one hand and Fire and Air on the other hand.

The interacting energies in a Hellenistic sextile are compatible. This is the case with this example from my natal chart: The air of my Saturn rekindles the fire of my Mars.

  • What are the houses involved when using the whole sign houses system?

Mars in Sagittarius is in the 11th House, and Saturn in Aquarius is in the 1st House.

I went back to this text to analyze the specifics of the houses.

My Saturn is located in the 1st House. These are the meanings connected with it:

Life. Breath. Body. Physical appearance. Personality. Personal expression. Identity. Vitality. Beginnings. Primary experiences. Identifications.

The questions that can arise for someone with Saturn in this house have physical and inner connotations.

The return of Saturn in the 1st House is about defining who I am, what interests me, and how I want to present myself in society.

On the more optimistic end of the spectrum, the Saturn return can mean taking better care of myself and exercising to improve my physical vitality and health. It can also mean taking on responsibilities and carrying them out with great strength.

On the more negative side, illnesses or injuries may appear because the 1st House is linked to the body.

Saturn will also ask me to question what I consider to be figures of authority and assume that I can resolve conflicts that would be impossible for others to handle. Saturn reminds me that I am truly that bitch!

Mars is in the 11th House, and these are the meanings associated with it:

Community. Groups. Friendships. Shared ideals. Projects. Social reforms. Alliances. Organizations. Clubs. Associations. Patrons. Benefactors. Fans. Audience. Mutual aid. Faith. Trust.

Aspects involving Mars signify asserting my own power and physical and sexual energy.

These aspects are also connected with decisive action, leading, and having the pioneering courage to try new experiences that can activate creative initiative.

Patience doesn’t come seamlessly when Mars is active in a natal chart. However, it is necessary to develop it to achieve the best results from Mars’ original and impulsive actions.

Harmonious aspects involving this planet could indicate the ability to assert myself, be determined, and pursue my goals with consistent action.

  • What facts associated with the aspects between Saturn and the planet in question are manifested in your life?

The facts taken from the post “Saturn Aspects: An In-Depth Exploration” are these:

  1. You need to structure and discipline the expression of your energy and self-assertion.
  2. Patience helps you achieve your goals.
  3. Focusing your physical energy and initiative on demanding objectives will help you reach concrete achievements.

Numbers 1 and 2 are manifested in my life. I would like for number 3 to be a reality as well. Usually, number 3 occurs when I have to achieve objectives associated with other people, such as bosses or family members, rather than with my personal goals.

  • What would you like to change or improve about the manifestation of this aspect in your life?

I would like to be more patient. I want to be so focused on my goals that I commit daily until I achieve the desired manifestation.

  • Did something unexpected come to mind while you were following your stream of consciousness?

I felt happy that this is the tightest aspect that Saturn does in my natal chart. I have a Saturnian chart (Saturn and Ascendant in Aquarius), and I know that Saturn’s conversation with Mars helps me with my work as someone who focuses heavily on the planet of the rings.

To achieve my goals, I need more patience and structure. However, I’m relieved that Mars’ initiative and Saturn’s responsibility are on my side, especially as an authority within a community.

I always tell people to focus on the tight conjunctions and the challenging aspects to grasp the possible obstacles they’ll meet during their Saturn return. In my case, I should have focused on Venus at 0° Scorpio in the 10th House squaring Saturn at 3° Aquarius in the 1st House.

But this sextile is actually the tightest aspect involving Saturn, and, therefore, it is more powerful in my natal chart. The square between Venus and Saturn showed me some discomfort and limitations, which I’m thankful for.

Nonetheless, I also want to honor the good aspects that helped me survive my Saturn return and still help me every day to sort out problems.

Engaging in my own journaling prompts to deconstruct my Saturn return

Mars in Sextile to Saturn in the Natal Chart

As mentioned earlier, a sextile is a harmonious aspect related to spontaneous abilities, talents, and forms of understanding and expression.

The planets’ energies and signs in the sextile vibrate harmoniously and reinforce each other.

This aspect shows where I can cultivate new levels of understanding and objectivity. It indicates spontaneous harmony and often a specific ability.

When Mars is in sextile to Saturn, the talent relies upon the capacity to act decisively with structure and responsibility to build something new from something that already exists. And to do it in a structured and well-organized way.

Saturn is a planet associated with structure, authority, legacy, and projects or experiences that have endured the test of time.

Mars is the planet of decision, action, drive.

When they work together harmoniously, they can endure challenges constructively. If this harmony is expressed in a sextile, they can even offer a platform from which new beginnings or perspectives can take off.

This attitude of allowing the new to bloom is especially significant since the signs involved in my natal sextile are Sagittarius and Aquarius.

These two signs are not afraid to rock the boat, engage in creative practices, advocate for freedom, and have a nonjudgmental and open attitude toward new people, experiences, projects, or places.

Sagittarius and Aquarius look at the world with the eyes of a curious child.

In my natal chart, Mars is in Sagittarius in the 11th House, and Saturn is in Aquarius in the 1st House.

While the 1st House is associated with individual traits such as the body, the personality, and one’s identity, the 11th House deals with collective topics such as communities, audiences, and benefactors.

This sextile implies that I can offer my unique quirks and characteristics to benefit a whole community or collective experience.

My talents should not be a best-kept secret. They have to be shared and socialized. Communication is my sword, and I don’t have to be afraid to use it.

The Impact of The Tightest Saturn’s Aspect During My First Saturn Return

Since my first Saturn return has already ended, I’m doing a retrospective about the meaning of this aspect during this rocky period of my life.

Now that I think about it, this aspect was very active during my first Saturn return. But when I was living it, I wasn’t aware of it.

The sextile between Mars in Sagittarius and Saturn in Aquarius manifested in a talent for accepting the new.

And it was quite a literal manifestation.

As I have already explained in another text, my father died unexpectedly during my first Saturn return.

His death opened the door to many new experiences, both positive and negative.

Besides dealing with sadness and grief, I had to take care of legal and financial matters that were completely unknown to me before his death.

But I had the resources to handle EVERYTHING that was thrown at me.

I had to speak with different types of people, make tough decisions, sell goods, pay debts, and help my family through all of it.

My first Saturn return showed me that I can be an authority and do things my way, and doing things my way implies involving other people in the conversations.

People say that to raise a child, you need a village. I say that to survive a death in the family, you need a village, too. This is the 11th House in action.

I wouldn’t have survived on my own. I needed friends, family, customers, neighbors, lawyers, accountants, bankers, and others to help me out through this whole process.

It was long and dark and uncertain.

But my Saturn in the 1st House gave me the weapons to embody the traits I needed to use at that turbulent time—gravitas, stamina, responsibility, patience, and hard work.

My first Saturn return made me realize that I’m now the adult in the family who has to act decisively, make decisions wisely, protect the ones I love fiercely, and think long-term in every area of life.

Mars sextile Saturn made me realize that I can act as an authority, do things my way and trust that I have the necessary tools to do it with a steady but mindful approach.

On a not-so-positive note, I didn’t take good care of my body and health during my first Saturn return. I used all my energy to solve problems instead of exercising or eating healthy.

Relying on food was my coping mechanism. It numbed me so I wouldn’t feel pain. The effect lasted for a short period (until the next greasy meal) and had some negative consequences on my physical and mental health.

(Luckily, after my first Saturn return, I did a deep dive into my habits and patterns. Right now, my relationship with food and exercise is vastly different.)

I wish I had learned that I have all this power within me in different circumstances, but life wanted to teach me this lesson in this specific format during my first Saturn return.

Sometimes, a traumatic event can unleash your true power. And you can conjure that power in the future without reliving that trauma. This is one of the biggest lessons I learned during my first Saturn return.
